Two Manuscript Collections Now Open to Researchers

Fri, 05/15/2009 - 12:12

Two sets of papers have been recently cataloged and opened to researchers in the Georgetown University Library Special Collections Research Center.

  • Peter J. Sullivan (1821-1883) was a notable officer in the American Civil War, and later served as U.S. Minister to Colombia (1867-1869).  While this collection of his papers includes a few items relating to the Civil War, the bulk details Sullivan's unsuccessful and largely forgotten efforts to obtain a treaty with the nation of  Colombia for the construction of a ship canal across the Isthmus of Darien.  Only much later would the United States build the Panama Canal across the Isthmus of Panama.
  • Ames W. Williams is best remembered as the bibliographer of Stephen Crane.  In 1948, together with Vincent Starrett, Williams co-authored Stephen Crane: A Bibliography.  Williams' papers include ample correspondence among Stephen Crane scholars.
