Tools for Libraries
DCPC provides tools and instructions for the libraries to edit or create metadata records for their digital collections.
DC-dot Editor
DC-dot is a Web-based Dublin Core generator and editor, developed by Andy Powell at UKOLN, University of Bath, United Kingdom. DCPC adopted DC-dot's Dublin Core data entry form, added several features, integrated it with Greenstone's collection management tools, and use it as a metadata creating and editing tool.
The features of the DCPC enhanced DC-dot include:
- Digital object identification: a list of digital objects available for cataloging is automatically generated with a link to view the object. Once the object is cataloged, the object and related images are removed from this list.
- Local authority control: the data entry form includes drop-down pick lists for selecting standard metadata values, such as personal names, subjects, material types, and so on. Authority files can be created from standard vocabularies, or automatically generated from existing metadata in the collection.
- Metadata editing: DC-dot and auxiliary tools allow searching, jumping to a record, editing and deleting records, and adding new fields.
- Template creation: templates for various kinds of records can be created and used to automatically generate metadata for Dublin Core fields.
- Digital object access: master and derivative image files can be viewed and retrieved.
Instructions for Using the DC-dot Editor
This is general instructions for the library staff to use DC-dot editor. It requests login. Staff from the WRLC member libraries can obtain login information from DCPC. Specific instructions for creating new records and editing complicated records will be prepared by DCPC upon request. Requests for making global changes in a collection can be sent to DCPC and DCPC staff will make the global changes.
Dublin Core Data Dictionary
The Data Dictionary provides information about the qualified Dublin Core fields and indexes used in the Greenstone system to provide search and browse options.
EAD Finding Aid Form
DCPC is working with the libraries to create a data entry form for creating EAD finding aids.
